Before it could issue National Gold Bank Notes, each bank was required to deposit U.S. bonds with the Treasury of the United States equal to the total face value of the currency it planned to issue. The notes were redeemable for gold coins at the Gold Bank, thereby alleviating the distrust of paper currency in the America West and retaining gold as currency.
